How to use the spending plan template
- Open the template. Click "View Template" to open the Google Sheet in your browser. No sign-in is needed to look around.
- Start with the Monthly Spending Plan tab. Enter your take-home pay, then list your needs, wants, and savings. Our guide on how to build a budget that actually works walks through the 50/30/20 split.
- Fill in your Personal Financial Snapshot. List what you own and what you owe to see your net worth. If debt is part of the picture, read a practical plan for paying down debt.
- Set goals in the Goals Tracker. Add a target amount and date for each goal, like an emergency fund, a down payment, or retirement savings. See investing basics: RRSPs, TFSAs, and compound growth.
- Review once a month. A 15-minute monthly check-in comparing your plan to what actually happened is usually enough to stay on track.
